Consultants’ Favorite Reasons to have an E-zine   Comments

From the BACN forum on Feb 27, 2004.

Of those present at the Bay Area Consultants Network meeting on 2-27-04, many had electronic newsletters or e-zines, and many more were considering it. Here are some of the reasons e-mail newsletters are good for consultants (paraphrased slightly):

  • They keep people apprised of your expertise.
  • They keep you in touch with people you haven’t seen for years, who give you referrals.
  • They’re viral—people forward them.
  • They can get you media attention
  • They remind people who you are the next time you meet them at a cocktail party

And a few tips people had for how to use or format them:

  • Writing for other people’s e-zines can be easier than doing your own; try posting articles to online article banks.
  • The best e-zines are short paragraphs with links to articles on websites (one member’s opinion; may not be what your own reader prefers).
  • Make sure your article will be easy to print if that’s how people like to read their newsletters.
  • Use PDF rather than HTML for posting your article to your website (it’s harder for people to change or steal).
  • Make sure articles on your website or in article banks are keyword-optimized

Do you have an e-zine? Why or why not? Post your answers as comments or send them to sallie@fileslinger.com
